I suggest starting with the Trisquel GNU/Linux distribution because it's the primarily used GNU/Linux distribution used by the Free Software Foundation, and it's also the simplest distro to use. The current Trisquel version (Trisquel 10), is based on Ubuntu 20.22 which is already supported by Mozilla VPN.
However, Mozilla VPN does not work with Trisquel 10 when I tried it, download the full log here: https://github.com/mozilla-mobile/mozilla-vpn-client/issues/2703#issuecomment-1209932627. I installed the extra package resolvconf as suggested in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-install-mozilla-vpn-linux-computer, and rebooted, but it did not make any difference.

To date, the only GNU/Linux distro supported by Mozilla VPN is Ubuntu (see "What devices is Mozilla VPN compatible with?". Other GNU/Linux distributions says: We offer limited support for other Linux distributions. Users on unsupported Linux distributions are welcome to report bugs on Github.
About 1000 GNU/Linux distros exist, so ideally, don't make Mozilla VPN distro-dependent. For example, Private Internet Access for GNU/Linux runs on any distro, I've tried it in Trisquel. However, if that's not possible then it makes sense to add support specifically for the free GNU/Linux distributions.
