Background

In order to test the Mozilla VPN in the new countries where we’ll launch, we want to push the latest stable version of the app (2.15) to the “Closed Testing” channel on the Google Play Console:

https://play.google.com/console/u/0/developers/7083182635971239206/app/4976151711428006761/closed-testing

Once that’s done, QA will be able to verify that users can indeed see the app from the new countries in question.

This requires that the following sub-tasks are done first:

Santiago Andrigo Will this be part of a separate VPN release? Also, what approach will be used for iOS? Thank you!

➤ Santiago Andrigo commented:

For Android: We would use 2.15 (nothing new). For iOS: I don’t know yet 🙂 I have to research how this all works in that ecosystem.

Hey! Just FYI that train is live. It’s automatically enabled for the VPN/QA internal testing group. If we need more e-mails added to that, let me know 🙂

Following-up on this via Slack with Basti.

Will leave a comment when the setup is complete and we can verify it.

The following emails were added to the closed group:

While being logged with these accounts in the Play Store and being localized in one of the Wave 6 countries:

While being in an unsupported country - i.e. Norway - and using the above account in Play Store - Mozilla VPN app is visible using direct link, but no installation button and a red note informing the user that the VPN is not available in that country are displayed.

Dunno if Basti did this himself, but I see those addresses in the Closed Testing group already.

Valentina Virlics For this:

{quote}Mozilla VPN app is not returned after search - Basti mentioned that this might be ok, Santiago Andrigo ?{quote}

Do you mean that you are using the VPN to one of those countries and then trying to see if the Play Store shows the Install button? Does it work when you use one of the already launched countries?

data-sync-user commented 1 year ago

➤ Valentina Virlics commented:

Santiago Andrigo Yes, if I am localized with a VPN in for example Croatia and being logged into the Play Store with a closed testing account, I go and search for “Mozilla VPN“ and the app is not displayed through results;

If I localize myself in an already released country, I see the Mozilla VPN through the search results.

Santiago Andrigo / Basti Does something changed on this Closed testing group?

Current behavior:

➤ Santiago Andrigo commented:

I did some digging, and here’s a very confusingly worded article that I take to mean that the App should be available but not through searching, but rather via direct link:

https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/9845334?hl=en ( https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/9845334?hl=en|smart-link )

!image-20230623-131415.png|width=906,height=524!

The other thing I found is that if you open a link of the form of this:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mozilla.firefox.vpn&hl=en_US ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mozilla.firefox.vpn&hl=en_US )

… on your Android device, it should automagically open the Google Play Store.

Does this help?

➤ Santiago Andrigo commented:

Nevermind, I just realized that you did the testing in June 14th according to this, and verified that opening the direct app page does reflect the countries where we’ve launched and haven’t launched.

➤ Valentina Virlics commented:

As we are able to see (using direct link) and downloading the app while in the new countries, we are marking this as verified-fixed.
