Review Firefox Preview- Areesha Tariq #3

Name the three biggest issues

  1. The user gets the impression of the application being slow/ unresponsive
  2. Tabs and Collections should be displayed in a compact format
  3. Unable to save/ download image

Explain why it’s an issue

  1. When a link is clicked, it does not open unless it is loaded and if the loading bar is overlooked, the user might click again. This gives the user the impression that the application is slow and unresponsive.

  2. Tabs and collections are displayed in rows which require a lot of scrolling when multiple tabs are opened simultaneously.

  3. When a user long presses an image and clicks ‘Save image’, the image is not saved/ downloaded and a pop-up is displayed ‘Firefox Preview can’t download this file type’. If the user opens the image and long presses it, no pop-up to save/ download the image appears on the screen.

Show us how you would improve it

  1. I would improve this by working on a skeleton screen that should appear until the requested page is loaded. This will give the users the impression that the application is fast and responsive.
  2. I would work on better ways in which opened tabs and collections can be displayed in a compact format. There should be ways such as a multi-column grid, drop-down to preview tabs and collections so that in the case when many tabs are opened simultaneously, scrolling can be eliminated.
  3. I would improve it by discussing the issue with the development team. All image file formats should be supported by the application. Once a user opens an image and long presses it, a pop-up should appear giving the option to download/ save the image.

How would you measure your designs effectiveness?

  1. By comparing the retention rate of the users before and after issue 1 and 2 have been fixed, I would get the measure of design effectiveness. The rate at which the users interact with the application will also give a measure of design effectiveness.
  2. The design effectiveness would be measured based on task success which would include getting the number of users who downloaded images using the Firefox Preview Application.

@areeshatariq thanks for your feedback.

Could you open an issue in the Firefox Preview (Fenix) GitHub repository (github.com/mozilla-mobile/fenix/issues) for your 3rd point "Unable to save/ download image" and just copy your observations over? Thanks!
