As a user, I want an intuitive way to know how to switch to private browsing, so I don't have to search for it in the browser.
Why is it a problem?
Some users may see the current private tab button as an icon indicating that Fenix is always private since it never tracks user data. Also, the private browsing feature is an important feature in Fenix and should be easy to access.
How would you solve the problem? What is your design proposal?
I would run a little test with some users to confirm how much of an issue this is in real life. Additionally, I would explore UI patterns and other browsers for some sort of competitive analysis.
For the design, I would consider making the button more prominent by masking the icon within a shape, like a circle, and making it slightly bigger as shown below. An added reason for this would be that this is the design already used on the Private tab page. The icon is placed in a circle. So, I think it would be more consistent if it appeared that way on the main page too. I would also consider how the button would appear in light and dark mode.
How would you measure your designs effectiveness?
I would evaluate the effectiveness of the design by running a usability test to see how long it takes a new user to locate the private browsing feature and why.
