More ligatures? #53

Open chrsMon opened 9 years ago

It's not really an issue, but I could not find any information on this. Are more ligatures planned? I think ligatures for ft, fj and ff (maybe even ffi, ffl and fft (in extrema for st, but might be too much)) would make this font more beautiful, especially for print.

Cheers, Cris

Added to the roadmap

Adding a vote for programming centric ligatures for Fira Mono; it would be awesome if something like https://github.com/tonsky/FiraCode could get merged upstream.

+1 for more ligatures. This should be considered in the 4.2 or 4.3 release.

But let's try not to go Roboto: screen shot 2016-05-11 at 5 58 03 pm None of those had to be there. It actually makes things worse. Roboto's overuse of ligatures (luckily st and ft are discretionary) caused me to switch to Fira Sans on my Android.

I also suggest tt, rt, and rf.

Programming ligs are a good idea, I use Fira Code in my IDE and I love it. Add that upstream plus italic Mono, fix spacing, and release TTF versions of Condensed, and we have a perfect font family.

Ligatures can also be used in mono fonts to fix kerning issues. A nice example of a mono-font that does this is Monoid, which you can try out on it's website:

monoid-ligatures

And speaking of Fira Code, which is basically Fira Mono + programming-related ligatures, I recently asked if the latter used them to even out regular character spacing. It doesn't and won't, so now my hopes are set on you implementing this upstream.

Perhaps this should be a separate ticket for a ligature request..
