are you thinking about a design without a shadow or what do you have in mind? I think it's fairly simple already but if you have some suggestions, feel free to leave them here ;)
this icon is used by https://location.services.mozilla.com/ as well, and I think it's supposed to be the same on every plattform
Well, the current notification icon appears to have been "greyed out", which IMHO was the desired behaviour in pre 5.0 devices. What I a suggest is using the same icon as the app icon in the notification area as well (which IMHO is what Google's apps seem to do. In terms of code, its a very minute change. Further, I guess what would be more appropriate is retaining the circular image outline as before but having it display the actual coloured icon rather than the greyed out version. This would even make more sense once #1287 and #1282 are implemented. :)
Below are the screenshots in case if we replace the notification icon with the app icon (maybe not the most elegant solution for now) :
cannot hurt to bring in some color I didn't know that the icon is shown with a grey circular background, which looks ugly IMO either we need to make it brighter or use the colored version instead and without the grey circle
on the page you linked google used grey for the icons only if there was an image of a contact/if it was about a contact without an image the icon was colored the reason behind all that grey/less color in the notifications is that the applications themselves should stand out more, notifications shouldn't interfere with the colors of the opened app (take a look at the recommendations after "Use distinct icons")
how it looks right now is definitely not good maybe someone else has a different idea
Please, use only white and transparency
In the image below you can see that the current icon is not conform material design and being visually a bit disrupting. For an app that is running most of the time it is better to have it look as system-wise as possible. Any color or grey draws unneeded attention to it, especially since there is not notification as an incoming message to which the user must attend to.
Notifications have undergone a major change in Android 5.0 . With this, the icon displayed in the notification area for several of Google's own apps have followed the "material design" approach to switch over to more elegant icons. I suggest that the icon currently being used in the notification area ic_status_scanning be replaced with an icon more apt for the Android 5.0 UX.
