UI glitches cause failures starting in appcompat 23.3.0 #1781

The build currently works with appcompat 23.0.0 and support 23.0.0, but opening the PreferencesScreen causes a crash starting in at least appcompat v23.3.0. This might affect other versions > 23.0.0, but I haven't tested yet.
