On mobile, my global unread count seems to include mentions plus channels that have been updated since my last visit. Some channels, I will rarely visit. As a result, I've learned to ignore the little red badge that shouts 5 at me all the time.
Most users would probably prefer a count of unread mentions. Updated channels are already highlighted in the channel list.
I wouldn't call this a p1 critical bug. Or even p2. But it might be an easy fix.
