Google Analytics seems simplest?

Only other real option seems to be http://piwik.org/ but guessing the extra work setting up the server would make this a no go

Eh, Piwik is easy to set up. At least it was on my hobby server :) That might be overkill, though.

But, I think whatever we use for metrics might depend on a) what to measure and b) who's looking at it? Standard stuff in GA is probably fine, but I seem to remember we had some in-house thing at some point.

Sadly, there's a lot of legal hurdles involved with sending data to a new service.

We've got a GA account already, we could also use datadog, but I kinda suspect GA will give us more out of the box. In either case, we need to sanitize on the front-end before sending the data down--so defining what we want to collect will be a major piece of setting up front-end metrics.
