removing messina #369

@gvn Do you by any chance remember why this wasn't landed? Is this still something we depend on?

@gvn I was asking because I was debugging an issue related to it, I ran it by cade & gideon and we don't appear to be using it anymore so it's since been removed! Thanks 👍
