Here are a rough versions of the issuer & earner open dashboard I've been working on.

Feedback is more then welcome!

Some ramblings thoughts...

  1. First and foremost, how do these designs compare to the logged out home-page? There's a block in the 'Earn a badge' section for first-timers, but first timers will not be logged in (I assume!), so won't be able to issue badges, or have any recent contributions.
  2. Related - I know it's only text at this point, but I'm not a big fan of the 'contribution' language. Not all of the badges are contributions in the normal sense of the word, and when I see 'contribution' in this context my immediate thought is badges I've given, rather than received (i.e. badges I've contributed).
  3. We have no statistics on team membership right now (for somewhat obvious reasons), but I would imagine the vast majority of users won't be a member of a team, so we need to think about how the 'Issue a badge' tab will work for most people.
  4. Finally, I've been thinking more about 'badge issuing', and why it feels like we're making it too prominent. Can't quite verbalise it, but I did do some number crunching as part of that process:

    • There are currently 2734 user accounts, and 258 badges (that's not quite 1 badge created for every 10 users)
    • Of the 2734 users, only 117 have actually created a badge (approximately 1 in 23)
    • Most of those 117 users have created only one badge (only 48 of them have made more than one)
    • So, only ~4% of users have actually made a badge, and only 2/5 of them have made more than one (~1.75% of all users)

Graph showing numbers of people having created 1-10 badges

PS: Is that green colour final? Or is it just a placeholder? 'Cause it gives me a headache (almost literally). Not sure if you've seen the Sandstone style guide or not.

Thanks @andrewhayward. I'm reviewing this with @zzzndr shortly, and wording and colors are placeholder.

@andrewhayward, really appreciate you pulling this information (I should have thought to ask for it sooner). @zzzndr is going to reach out to you on Monday AM GMT to discuss, and in the meantime, I wanted to share this feedback from @mattheww regarding the homepage:

I was a little confused by the big tabs. It feels a bit odd to steer the homepage with selections inside this tab. I like that the tabs give a quick intro to the two purposes of the site, but to me it feels like they should serve as intros that take us to two pages ... one for browsing available badges, the other for creating and issuing.

Alternatively, the homepage could be all about browsing for potential earners with a call to action that points to the secondary page for contributing, creating, and issuing.

Eager to get your thoughts @christensenep @zzzndr @andrewhayward @davidascher.

This. Very much this.

+1 the more I think about this... most issuers will arrive at the site already knowing about badges and that they want to issue a badge. And so long as there is a reasonably findable route into the badge design/issuing process, those people will be predisposed to finding it.

Weird, could have sworn I'd left a comment here! But yeah, I meant to say pretty much what adam said... issuing seems like an "admin" feature that I think is reasonable not to place front-and-center on the page.

zzzndr commented 10 years ago

I've copied links to new wireframes in the mozbadges etherpad without an earner / issuer tab and a dedicated issuer page (:

The idea is to only show the link to the badge issue page to users who are vouched Mozillians
