Contribution badge counting question #45

Open emgollie opened 10 years ago

emgollie commented 10 years ago

User feedback on recent wireframes (https://openbadges.etherpad.mozilla.org/badges-mozilla-org-wireframes) included this comment: "I wish it was possible to see all badges that count as 'contribution' badges." Curious to hear your thoughts on how to distinguish these particular badges if at all, @adamlofting? cc @zzzndr @dajbelshaw @davidascher

That would certainly be possible to do, but there are two caveats/reasons not to do this directly in badges.m.o (at least not right away):

  1. While a badge like a 'Webmaker Mentor' badge clearly correlates with a contributor, some teams are planning to use badges in less direct ways, e.g. 'an active contributor is someone who receives 3 badges from a certain set within 6 months'. These rule-sets can get complex and are expected to change often this year as teams decide how well they reflect actual contribution: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Contribute/Conversion_points
  2. There's a fear of 'spam' badges polluting an otherwise high-bar threshold to being counted as a contributor. By keeping the list of which badges count as contribution separate from the actual badges, if the issuing of a particular badge did seem to diverge from the high-bar active contribution definition, then we can remove that badge from the list without affecting the badges directly.

So, my general view is we shouldn't bake these rules into badges.m.o, at least not right away. As this would only complicate the product and we don't know enough about the use of these rules yet.

However, that doesn't preclude us from being able to show a list of which badges count as contribution somewhere. There's an active conversation about how the wiki-page with the contribution rules can be systematized: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Contribute/Conversion_points and part of that documentation will include which badges each team counts as contribution.
