KITES prototype #613

KITES is a project about communication, distance and intimacy.

it pairs up participants across India and the UK, and rvery day for a year asks them one simple questions sent to them by SMS. Their answer is shared with their partner so that gradually over the 365 days a portrait of the other person, their lives unfolding thousands of miles away is revealed.

this prototype will examine the question exchange between two strangers, simulating the core interaction at the heart of the project. Whereas KITES will send answer to questions from India to the UK, in this instance we will host two screens (probably ipads) that will serve up a series of questions allowing participants to send their answers and receive other’s in return working locally. The exchange will be quite casual and brief and be there to both test some of the content and see what questions elicit interesting or compelling answers as well as raise interest and awareness about the project.

the whole thing will run on a local server - so a desk or table with a plug to run a laptop and wifi router - and somewhere to host two ipads (i have cases but won’t have any stands with me) - this can be modular and improvised when i’m there and also moved around during the festival. Some place for a bit of print would also be great.

I need to actually build the prototype so will probably uncover some nice interaction for users along the way and there may be scope for it to run on people’s phones too so more people can participate - although probably not with actual SMS but on the web.

@cubicgarden this one is a project that Mozilla (Laura) have been involved with. I think it's a GREAT linkup with the 'staring into peoples eyes" idea...
