Due to the way elements are structured, the popover is always going to be centered on one side of the yellow box you see. With this in mind, I think making it appear on the bottom—just like if you were to edit an element on the top row—would be best. Is this what you had in mind?

yeah that would be good. then it's consistently below and still within the screen width.
