Description

After the I annotate 2016 in Berlin this year, WorldBrain, W3C Annotation Working Group, Hypothes.is and a bunch of other projects decided to relaunch the efforts of the AnnotatorJS project to spin off an anchor library to annotate any kind of web content.

We saw the problem that every annotation project needs to anchor on the same types of web content like text, images, video, maps and many more. But everyone of them is currently developing and maintaining their own implementations of content selectors and robust linking logics (securing an annotation in case of changes in the content). Unfortunately no project is able to anchor to all the content they want. This is why we aim to create an open source library of annotation anchors and robust linking logics.

It is also the first step towards the vision of the Annotating All Knowledge Coalition “to create an open, interoperable annotation layer over their content” Basically to jointly develop a stack of software tools every annotation related project needs to start off with ease (like UI, storage, user system, permissions, filter, search, APIs etc.) and to be able to communicate with all other annotation clients. As a good analogy is “email”, where every user can chose their own clients and is still able to read and write to people that use other clients.

We want to incubate the whole endeavour as a Apache Software Foundation project to make it as accessible as possible by for- and non-profits alike.

In case you have not seen our sprint reports yet, I publish a 2 minute update video every 2 weeks: www.worldbrain.io/blog/

Status of the project:

The incubation process is kicked off and we are planning our first meeting with all the projects that showed interest in collaborating on this open-source library.

Want to Contribute?

You are a project working with annotations?

GREAT!

  1. Leave a comment in this issue to let the project lead know you're interested in contributing to this library
  2. Put yourself on the AnnotatorJS mailinglist to stay updated.

You know a project that uses annotations?

It would be great having all projects that benefit from this library “in the room” as we discuss the scope, community, and code we hope to build there.

  1. Please add a comment here to tell us which it is.

Thanks and happy annotating!
