Calculating child support [heading]

In general, child support in Michigan must follow the Michigan Child Support Formula. You can calculate child support based on the Formula by using the MiChildSupport Calculator on the MDHHS website. [link to Calculator: https://micase.state.mi.us/calculatorapp/public/welcome/load.html] [definition/help text for MDHHS: Michigan Department of Health and Human Services] The Calculator will create a results page with the amounts of child support (base support, ordinary medical, etc.) and other numbers you will need for your motion and order.

-Use the numbers on the Calculator results page to answer the questions in this tool about the support amounts you want, AND
-Fill out the Uniform Child Support Order you will get at the end of this tool using the Calculator results page. You will see a reminder to fill out the Support Order in the instructions you can download at the end of this tool.

Asking for a child support deviation [heading]
Sometimes a parent asks for a child support amount that differs from the Formula amount, called a support deviation. This tool will give you the option to ask for a deviation instead of the Child Support Formula amount. However, you will have to show the court that the Formula amount is unfair or inappropriate. This is required even if the parties agree to a deviation. You will also need to fill out and file a form called the Uniform Child Support Order Deviation Addendum, along with your Motion Regarding Support and Uniform Child Support Order.
This tool will provide you with a blank Deviation Addendum if you want to ask for a deviation. You will see information about filling out the Deviation Addendum in the instructions you can download at the end of this tool.

If you can’t calculate child support [heading]
If you have trouble using the MiChildSupport Calculator [link to Calculator: https://micase.state.mi.us/calculatorapp/public/welcome/load.html] and you’re not sure what the new support amounts should be, you can answer “I don’t know” to the questions this tool asks you about support numbers. If you answer this way, this tool will produce a motion asking the court to refer you to the Friend of the Court for a support investigation, along with a referral order. You will see more information in the instructions you can download at the end of this tool.
