Simplified recording functionality #579

I am going to start doing some ongoing clean up of residual code as things are getting confusing with so much old vestigial code. I've created a recording branch that has all of this legacy code and can be used to create some dedicated and simplified camera management functionality that can then be folded into main at some future data. Real time efficient synchronized webcam recording will still have some limited usefulness, even if only for demo purposes, so I don't want to completely lose that just yet...
