a) What is the actual FFmpeg version (as opposed to the libraries' versions)
b) What does vainfo
give you on that system? it sounds like your VA-API driver is coughing (iHD).

Sorry for bumping this but was there any solution found?
I face a similar problem: after launching, mpv
reports:
[vaapi] libva: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/iHD_drv_video.so init failed
then says:
Using hardware decoding (vaapi).
and proceeds with playing. But why the first error then?

Your hardware decoding is working, you can ignore the error message (it's because two vaapi drivers are present).
Hi,
first i had the: Failed to initialize a decoder for codec 'av1'. Video: no video Issue!
Now after installing ffmpeg 4 i get:
