hwdec=vdpau stopped showing video since 0.32 #7412

Important Information

Reproduction steps

Set hwdec=vdpau. Wth vaapi it's fine.

Expected behavior

Normal playback.

Actual behavior

No video (black screen), sound is ok, subtitles are shown, too.

That is known. Most likely a Mesa bug. Don't use vdpau on AMD.

Same here, upgraded from 0.29 to 0.32.

These work, but double the CPU usage. --vo=gpu --hwdec=hdpau-copy --vo=gpu --hwdec=vaapi --vo=gpu --hwdec=vaapi-copy

I know Mesa has issues (>=9.1 breaks VDPAU video output with HLS) but mpv 0.31 works, so something changed in 32.

mpv 0.31 should still break if you add --vf=vdpaupp. We only removed the other interop method. The method used now should actually be more efficient, but it broke with Mesa at some point. I don't have nvidia hardware, so I can't check it with their implementation either. I don't believe you that using vaapi doubles the CPU usage.

if vaapi doubles CPU usage then you have some vaapi emulation layer installed instead of actual hardware decoding going on.

I'm using an AMD APU, amdgpu kernel driver (5.4) + radeonsi mesa driver (19.3.2). I know that VDPAU is the API for AMD and NVIDIA, VAAPI is for Intel, did this changed lately?

Uninstall libva-vdpau-driver-0.7.4-r5 and libva-intel-driver-2.3.0, you need the mesa vaapi driver.

VAAPI is for Intel, did this changed lately?

VAAPI is cross-vendor.

Yeah, you're using the emulated vaapi driver. You should be using

LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=radeonsi

and then it should work fine.

AMD switched to preferring vaapi many years ago.

Last time I checked vaapi was not even close compared to vdpau. Now, with the radeonsi driver, vaapi has about the same cpu usage as vdpau. (With vlc is still worse.) Thanks.

As is documented, if you really want to use vdpau with nvidia, you also need to set gpu-context=x11

You also have to build mpv with glx support, which is disabled by default.
