I've tried it. No, you can not. .NET 6's end-of-life date is also approaching (November 12, 2024), so I hope this is an easy upgrade for the devs to do.

.NET 8 likely has dropped Windows 7 support, so it might be a disappointment for Windows 7 users.
.NET 8 support is now being tracked in #700, and this question can be (re)answered when that issue is closed.
