intermittent failure #3

seeing this on travis every so often:

1. Failure (at test-heartbeat.R#50): simple interface --------------------------
con$EXISTS(key) not equal to 0
0 - 1 == -1
Error: 1 / 751 tests failed
Execution halted

probably not an issue after rewrite
