I'm not crazy about the unnecessary removal of the CONFIG_DIR

That's fair, it seemed like an unnecessary constant to me, but i appreciate it's more visible.

assume you did the "git update-index --chmod=+x" trick suggested on the HA blog

I did. This can be undone in favour of marking it as executable within the Dockerfile as you had previously. Either way should work.
