What question/prompt will we pose at the beginning/end of the reading session?

1. Record a video of an answer to a close-ended question at the end of a research paper

Novice researchers: They use more memorization, recalling, and manipulation techniques to answer the question Experienced researchers: Organized, big ideas, specific, examples, provide data, structure in answers

2. Ask close-ended questions from all segments of the research paper (https://www.bachelorprint.com/research-paper/research-paper-outline/parts-of-a-research-paper/).

Novice researchers: Won’t know what the important parts of the research paper are so can answer only specific questions Experienced researchers: Will skim through important segments like research methodology, data analysis, and answer questions from the specific segments

Can we scaffold the summary as well using a template?

• What is the big-picture context? (Introduction/Motivation)
• What is the problem or open question? (Research Question)
• What is the proposed solution? (Methodology)
• What did the authors do specifically? (Experiment or Study)
• What are top 1-2 findings or big takeaways? (Results)
• How will this help the research community? (Discussion)
• The authors hope that the resulting corpus will help in dialogue research.

  • Critical reading
    • Are they solving the right problem?
    • Are there simple solutions the authors do not seem to have considered?
    • What are the limitations of the solution (including limitations the authors might not have noticed or clearly admitted)?
    • Are the assumptions the authors make reasonable?
    • Is the logic of the paper clear and justifiable, given the assumptions, or is there a flaw in the reasoning?
    • If the authors present data, did they gather the right data to substantiate their argument, and did they appear to gather it in the correct manner?
    • Did they interpret the data in a reasonable manner?
    • Would other data be more compelling?
  • Creative reading
    • What are the good ideas in this paper?
    • Do these ideas have other applications that the authors might not have thought of?
    • Can they be generalized further?
    • If you were going to start doing research from this paper, what would be the next thing you would do?
  • Summarize the paper in 1-2 sentences. Then, go deeper with 3-4 bullet points of the main idea.
  • Compare to other works
    • Are the ideas really novel or have they appeared before?
