11 years ago I'm in favor of glow, outlining, or other kinds of edge contrast enhancements. I'm not sure how this would be addressed purely through color/shape.

Make manipulators look more distinctly different. People sometimes think that pieces of geometry on an object might be a manipulator, presumably because manipulators don't look differently enough.
