prep walls

• strip walls to sheathing
  • [x] remove / disconnect anything attached to walls (Sept 10)
  • [x] remove existing siding (Sept 10)
  • [x] remove / pound flat remaining nails
• [x] brush walls to remove dust, debris, and wood particles (Sept 11)
• [x] spray foam fill all cracks and holes (Sept 11)

  install foam insulation

• [x] install z-channel flashing (Sept 11)
• [x] install insect screening / perfed J-channel / etc. to keep critters out of rain screen (Sept 11)
• [x] install foam board, caulk all outer edges, tape all seams (Sept 11, 12, 13)
• [x] install 2nd layer, joints offset, caulk all outer edges, tape all seams (Sept 11, 12, 13)
• [x] install furring strips (screw 24" o.c. to 1.5" stud penetration) (Sept 14)

Since this wall has no windows, it was fast going initially. On Saturday I stripped the wall bare.

On Sunday I installed the Z-flashing, insect screening, carried 26 sheets of insulation around the house, carried a pile of 8" siding around the house (as furring strips), and had both layers of insulation on 3/4 of the wall.

Then it took 2 more days to complete the last third, mainly because I was working off ladders. All the top pieces of insulation had to be cut, the furring strips all had to be cut, and it just takes much longer to haul all the materials up the ladders, hoist into place, and fasten when working off ladders.
