General Minecraft questions #90

Marcus sorry to ask here but you guys are all linux users and have been very helpful.

My son wants me to update the server to run Tekkit. I have looked and I just can not find a good set of instructions to install Tekkit on my linux server. We run the windows client and there seems to be an installer.

If I update the to the Tekkit server will the current world be overwritten? Will MSM still work with Tekkit?

Mod questions: My server is linux, how do I add a mod to my server. I found a few new commands I would like to add to the server - no starvation, chat filters, etc.

Same question for the client.

Do mods need to be installed on both the server and the client.

Thanks for any help.

Hi @kjkazinski. Sorry for taking a while to respond. I have been on holiday.

If I update to the Tekkit server will the current world be overwritten?

Upgrading a "vanilla" Minecraft server to a Tekkit server will not delete your world. But there are lots of Tekkit specific goodies that will be generated in the new "chunks" of your world but not in the existing parts. This means that newly explored areas will get stuff like volcanoes and oil springs. When I started my Tekkit server, I created a new world to get the full benefit.

Will MSM still work with Tekkit?

Yes. I use MSM myself to run a Tekkit server for me and my friends. I have discussed setting up Tekkit with another user here which may be of use to you.

How do I add a mod to my server?

You will need a non-vanilla server variant that supports mods. The best example right now is CraftBukkit which has a fantastic mod library. Tekkit is a variant of CraftBukkit, so you can use those same plugins with your Tekkit server.

How do I install client mods?

Client mods work in unison with similar server mods which support certain client mods. For example Tekkit servers require Tekkit clients to use the heavily modded Technic launch.

The major problem confronting modders right now is the disparity between server and client mods. Currently modded servers require separately modded clients as a prerequisite. Mojang are, as we speak, working on bringing a new modding API in Minecraft 1.4 which I assume marries the modding of server and client into one process, eliminating this annoyance.

However, there are some client mods which don't require server cooperation. SpoutCraft is a Minecraft client that allows users to install client mods. This all gets very complicated however, and access to servers with modded clients is clumsy and compatibility is ill thought out at this point.

Let me know if you're still confused about anything. Probably the best place to discuss things like this in the future is over at MSM's support/discussion site: http://msm.tenderapp.com/
