Addresses issues reported in RuleWorld#3 and RuleWorld#2

This pull request does some minor cleanup compared to the previous pull request.

@jjtapia Thanks Jose. I'm starting to review the changes, but I'd like to pull them into the 'dev' branch first to make sure master is always at the latest release. I'm also going to try and add in some tests with your changes. Can you please reopen this PR against the dev branch? Thanks!
