In order to make this easier to examine, is there a way for this to be split by issue/feature? I'd like to merge it, but the giant scope of the request is making me nervous.

Do you plan on splitting this request? If not, I will be attempting to do so myself later today.

Closing, due to merging some (but not all) of your changes. No explanation was given for JSON serialization, so I am not convinced to include it at this time as I don't know what it's for.
