Router Gets Slow After Being On for More Than a Couple Weeks #837

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.Leaving the router on and using it for over 2-3 weeks
2.-
3.-

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The router should stay pretty fast as when it is after being freshly rebooted.
However, it seems to slow down a lot after about 2 weeks of being on without a
reboot. The speedtests still yield the usual speed and ping, but video
streaming (even low quality) has major issues constantly and web pages seem to
take a while to load. I want to learn how to have a cron job that restarts the
router once a day at 4am. This way I won't run into any issues and this router
will stay snappy. Part of the reason for this slow down is probably because I
am a heavy user and the pool is getting filled with packets and the router
isn't releasing them. I do not know too much about routers, but even with all
clients disconnected, streaming and loading websites is slow and the router
shows low CPU and memory usage. However, once rebooted it is super fast again,
without even having to touch the cable modem, in this case the Motorola SB6141.
This issue lies within the router and it's not modems fault. The modem is rock
solid and super fast 24/7 and does not get slow ever. A reboot of the model
does nothing, as it is not the bottleneck in the network.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Latest firmware, 3.0.3.5-055, but this issue happened on the older custom
firmwares too. I am using Windows 7 SP1 64bit, not that this is related to the
operating system though.

Please describe the problem as detailed as it's possible.
Problem is stated above

If you have connection problem, then syslog file is required. (please do
attach it as a file)
There is nothing odd about the log file when the router slows down, but then
again, I am not too sure what all of it means and I'm just comparing it to the
default log file readings when rebooted.
Note that if there will be a poor problem description the issue status will
be changed to 'Invalid'!

Also, I wanted to say that the problem is not the connection from my ISP. I
have narrowed down the problem and found the issue. It's not the modem/ISP
cable connection/dns or anything like that, it's the router. The second it is
restarted after being on for a while, everything is instantly super fast again.
Thank you in advance for any help given to me. It is much appreciated.

Also, this is for Asus RT-N56U not 66U and it's on the full build of the
firmware, but also happens on the other builds too.

I've noticed the same thing as well. I noticed webpages loading slowly so I
tried rebooting the router, now things are running fast again

Same. Works great for about 5 minutes then slows down. Tried 4 different
firmwares.
