Actually, in reviewing the material in the book it is clear that the equations ARE non-linear (although it is possible to factor out the trivial solution from those equations which yields a linear system). As such, I think the wording is fine as is and I'm closing this ticket.
The Lotka-Volterra discussions about quiescence talks about solving non-linear equations, but they aren't really non-linear. Solving for the initial conditions is still only a linear problem. So the discussion should be revised to point out that it solves the simultaneous linear system automatically and that it could do the same for systems with non-linear systems.
