Go in edit mode with F2. (cursor turns pink/red) in Binary Mode: you can write bytes from alphabet

in Hex Mode: you can write nibbles with 0-9a-f an interesting mode, is that you can select a block and set the whole block with ALT + 0-9a-f. useful to fill a block with nops, cc, zeros..

in Disasm Mode: is not editable
