The following commands fixed the issue:

ls -l /dev | grep ttyUSB0
output from this command was: crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 188, 0 Jan 3 14:59 ttyUSB0
run following command to change permissions: sudo chmod 666 /dev/ttyUSB0
