Uninstalling Soundflower on Lion destroys internal Macbook sound #113

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Uninstall Soundflower on OS X 10.7.x
2. Go to System Preferences > Sound
3. Digital Out is the only option available. Internal sound is missing 
permanently. Any attempts to change the volume shows a greyed out volume bezel. 

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expect to see internal audio and digital out in system preferences. Expect the 
MacBook sound to work. Nothing works. Audio works when headphones are plugged 
in, but internal speakers are completely disabled. A red LED light in the 
headphone jack comes on and off.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Soundflower 1.5.2; OS X 10.7.2

Please provide any additional information below.
See attached screenshots for more detail. 

This is related to issue 99, but different; in issue 99 headphone audio was 
destroyed, but in my case headphone audio works, while internal audio is dead. 
I also have a red light. I had headphones plugged in when I uninstalled 
Soundflower… maybe that's why?

I've tried to reinstall and reuninstall Soundflower to see if that would 
reenable the internal sound drivers, but it did nothing. No amount of 
restarting fixes the issue either. It seems that my internal audio drivers are 
completely borked. 

This issue needs to be addressed ASAP. I'm going to have to reinstall the 
entire OS to see if I can clear this up. This is completely unacceptable and 
dangerous for software to be so destructive… (even though Soundflower was 
really useful)

Update: After scouring the internet for every forum post related to this topic, 
I have tried the following workarounds:

1. Jiggle a toothpick and Q-tip in the headphone and digital out jacks to reset 
a possible stuck switch
2. Reset the PRAM by restarting the computer while holding option-command-p-r
3. Reset the PMU by shutting down the computer, unplugging it from everything, 
taking out the battery, and holding the power button for 5+ seconds
4. Replaced contents of 
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.audio.coreaudiod.plist with a working 
version from Snow Leopard

Nothing worked. My laptop is still silent. 

Many forum posts said that a red light in the headphone jack and no internal 
audio could mean that the logic board is faulty, but I doubt that the logic 
board would decide to wig out the very instant that I uninstalled Soundflower.

Has *anyone* found a fix for this problem?

i'm afraid the same thing happened to me and no work arounds had any effect.

underfortunately, no one from Soundflower has ever addressed or commented, even 
though this issue is all over the internet.

i actually had to buy an small soundcard to carry around with me, even just to 
use the headphones.

they sadly do not seem to be taking any interest or responsibility :(

it's unfortunate, as it could be a great software, and of course wonderful it's 
free...but when it actually breaks your equipment and costs you more 
money...I'm gon to be writing to Google code who is hosting the download now...

They're on Twitter at @cycling74 and seem to be responsive to any @ replies, so 
I'll try talking with them directly starting tomorrow (I doubt they have anyone 
monitoring Twitter on a Sunday afternoon)

I installed at home yesterday to use w/smutefy. I just installed it at work. 
Now I'm scared of uninstalling :s

This is the same problem that i was when install soundflower on my mac with OSx 
Lion, i tried with every method with no results. I have to do a downgrade from 
osx lion to leopard, and then install again osx Lion.

SoundFlower kill the audio system in Lion, please dont try to install, the only 
solution is wait for a new release of the program, we really need this app, so 
i will be waiting.

(Sorry for my english, but im from another planet out of this galaxy)

I got the audio issues fixed by following these steps:
1. run the uninstaller that comes as part of the soundflower dmg
2. delete or move files from the /Library/Preferences/Audio directory
3. restart the system and your good to go

I HAVE A SOLUTION! click on the soundflowerbed! click audio setup at the 
bottom, right click build in input, use that, and then turn off flowerbed and 
its all good! :)

I installed Soundflower on my Mac mini (2012, Intel, OS 10.8.4 — Mountain 
Lion) some weeks ago (early in August, 2013, I think; does this identify the 
version?). It has caused no problems with the sound system: I can select 
Soundflower as my output in System Preferences and as my input in Audacity and 
record music streams from the internet, and can then reset output and input and 
my headphone socket works perfectly well. But — and it's a huge 'but'! — my 
computer has started crashing. It did not do this when I first installed and 
used Soundflower. Nonetheless the crash report seems to implicate the 
following: com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower 1.6.6

I shall have to uninstall Soundflower until this problem is fixed. Can anyone 
tell me whether there is an update that does fix the problem?

Additional information: I guess from the crash report mentioned in my post just 
above that the version of Soundflower I had is 1.6.6.

The other thing is that the Soundflower uninstaller didn't work properly, and I 
had to search for components and delete them manually.

Lost all audio on my macbook pro after installing this dodgy soundflower, loud 
buzzing sound from inbuilt audio,  even after uninstalling. After reading all 
the above posts I started plugging and unplugging my headphones into the 
socket. At first sound started up again, then suddenly it caused my whole 
computer to shut down! Terror! Then when it started up again everything was 
back to normal. This is my first post ever in a forum like this as I'm not a 
techie, but I will say this... soundflower is dangerous!

Hey guys, had the same problem - solving it was super easy in my case though: 
Headphone jack in (headphone sound works), plug it out again and boom back is 
the internal sound..

I love sound flower but this bullshit app caused a kernel panic which I could 
only fix by resetting the whole system :( very very disappointed with the app

Having similar problems. This software needs a LOT of work. Makes me wonder if 
the rest of their software is as terrible and buggy.

Have had nothing but problems with my OS sound/system preferences since 
installing. Uninstalling does nothing to fix the issues either. Installers 
BEWARE, NOT WORTH IT!

I fixed it! After two years, I fixed it! After I uninstalled soundflower two 
years ago and the internal speakers on my mac stopped working, I reinstalled 
OSX 3 separate times in an attempt to fix it. I even replaced the hard drive 
when the original one failed, and after I installed Mavericks the sound still 
didn't work! I had installed Windows through bootcamp, and on Windows, the 
speakers worked. But never on the mac, until my coworker found this picture on 
google images:

All it takes is a paperclip to hit the switch on the inside of the headphone 
jack on the wall farthest from the monitor, and POOF. It worked! Go figure. 
Fuck soundflower.

There is a fix for this...
Utilities > Audio Midi Setup > [Right Click] Built-In Output > Use this device 
for sound output
(Repeat the same for headphones as and when required).
