retiredjg:

I agree with LadyGeek that some things need to be removed from "portfolio tracker" if "portfolio tracker" is required to complete "portfolio review".

I'm not saying these things do not reveal important information. They do. I'm saying that people who want portfolio reviews are often beginners and will find a lot of this overwhelming. And to us "portfolio helpers" some of this information is extraneous.

For example, we don't care what the overall ER is -that is at least tertiary to what we are trying to do when helping people improve their portfolio structure. However, some of the things you are including interfere with what the "helpers" are trying to do with "Portfolio Review". I'm not sure how to resolve this situation. Possibly have a "basic portfolio tracker or entry tool" and a separate "stand alone portfolio tool" with more bells and whistles?

additional feedback from retiredjg:

I think some discussion of goals would be helpful.

From my point of view, as a very long time portfolio "helper", the format we are using for "asking portfolio questions" works pretty well. It is nothing more than a form to fill out and it took a lot of experience and a great deal of discussion to get it where it is. Every question is there for a reason and all extraneous stuff has been kept out...for a reason.

The information presented is not something that needs to be changed or improved. A few tweaks here and there has kept this method working for a number of years. The one improvement that could help is to have people's portfolios show up in percentages of the portfolio - a spreadsheet.

In my opinion, whatever you are doing should end up looking exactly like the current format. Adding anything is not helpful for portfolio review.

And whatever you end up with has to be essentially idiot proof. That is going to be a bit of a challenge, but you have been resourceful on those things so far.

There are things that an individual may find helpful in the portfolio tracker tool that are not helpful in portfolio review. Things like classifying debt or calculating the expense ratio are helpful for tracking one's portfolio. But forcing those things into the portfolio review format is making the format harder to use, not easier. Like LadyGeek, I am not in favor of additions or modifications.

Ok, there is one thing that might be helpful - having the actual asset allocation show up could be helpful on some portfolios.

i think we have to consider that what is good for an excellent personal portfolio tracker may not be an improvement for portfolio review. If there are ways to do both of these projects side by side, that is fine with me. But the current course of forcing all of portfolio tracker into portfolo review will make it harder for new people who have no idea what they are doing anyway. :happy

hid actual asset allocation & weighted expense ratio on /portfolio-review and /portfolio/accounts.

Also added link to bottom of /portfolio-review page saying:

Consider looking at an analysis of your portfolio in Portfolio Tracker: actual asset allocation & annual expense ratio fee total.

Also moved text about rich text formatting from bottom of /portfolio-review to top, now reading:

When ready to post to the forum, ensure that the inline formatting markup is shown. Rich text formatting like bold and underline help readability of your post! Checkbox: Show inline formatting markup: bold text Button: Copy content to clipboard
