So recently we came into a particular situation. We currently use a server that's shared among many groups and doesn't have its own password. We can't put a password on the server itself and don't want to change servers. Yet we wanted to stop the public entering and bugging us.
We also chose not to use access tokens because we've determined some people have enough trouble using VOIP as it is.
So we instead let registered users hop in freely (as nobody on the server was using registration as a restriction at the time). But we don't always have mods around, so we wanted to give everyone registration rights (i.e. if you're in you can invite more people in). But then they can edit peoples names. We went ahead with it anyway, and nobody has ever noticed but the point remains.
So this is sort of a two part request:
1) Can you split the register and edit registered users permissions? Sort of like an "invite" permissions.
2) Can we "register people per channel". The equivalent of pushing access tokens from the server basically.
