Previous and Next Story widgets always show 0 comments

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open any article
2. Scroll to the bottom, below the author & social sections, to find the 
Previous Story and Next Story images.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The blue bubble for comment numbers should show the number of comments on that 
post, instead it's always 0.

What operating system are you on?
ChromeOS, but I've seen the same on MacOS

What is your browser and its version?
Chrome v39
