Nightcafe

The first AI Art tool that I use is a generative text-to-art web app called Nightcafe. It is super simple to use, all you do is type text into the prompt, set some settings (resolution, aspect ratio), and push Go.

Deep Dream Generator

Nightcafe does image style-transfers, but so does deep dream generator. Deep Dream generator is better to use for style transfers because they give you more energy that recharges faster. I can do 4 medium resolution images on deep dream per day, while nightcafe you would only get 1 per day.

Deep Dream Generator has the style-transfer app as well as the Deep Dream functionality. I like the style transfers and don't really like the actual deep dreams. With deep dreams everything just turns into eyeballs and dog faces.. With a style-transfer you can take the style out of one image and apply it to another - for example, you could take Starry Night by Van Gogh and apply that painting style to your photographs.

Artbreeder

Artbreeder is a new one for me and super fun. It allows you to combine images VERY quickly. It has the ability to do absolutely incredible photo-real human portraits. It allows you to edit genes of an image to change the direction a person is facing, combine their face with another face, or generate a similar or different face. You can add Chaos to an image. It is amazing that you can adjust individual attributes - for example a landscape with a castle you could up the gene value for Castle, and it would create the image again but with a larger castle. You could up the gene value for "sea" and the castle is then surrounded by water. For portraits there are all sorts of attributes you can change.

What is most exciting to me about artbreeder is the animation capabilities. You can select 2 or more images, set the amount of time to transition, and generate 30 frames per second (or 24fps or 120) creating the effect of one thing morphing into another. Below is an example.

It will pull an infinite number of artworks from the worldwide Free Art Generator library and create a printout of your writing. Below are a few of the Nightcafe creations that I have already

The Moon

Some of the styles in deep dream generator are incredible. I used a kite by a street artist named Aunen (http://cabanai.tumblr.com/) as an example:

Deep dream generator has given me much more energy than traditional art, and I’m sure deep dream generator has many more uses that I have not yet explored.

Deep Dream Generator is free, and runs very fast. It is also completely public, so if you are not a developer or really want to leave something funny on the web for the world to see, you can use the API to get your website and photos on the web.

If you have been using Artbreeder in the past, then you probably have seen it as a web service somewhere that allowed you to set it up and play with some of its settings. If you have never used it, try it. It really works.

The image below is a random result of "genes" for a person:

If you use the image-editing engine, you can pick different editable attributes and try many different versions of the image. I made a portrait of Michael Phelps to see if I could combine a real photo with a poster from the Olympics:

In my tests I had difficulty picking "poster" as the appropriate editable attribute. That is my preference for this site - to choose an "image" you would see on a poster (but not your computer or phone screen), but in my testing some people still saw "video" and some still saw "print." The web service may have its limitations.

After playing around with the editable image, I also noticed some samples of the very interesting fractal art by Alex Sheets. I wanted to use a

I’m sure I could keep going, but this just highlights the artistic abilities and the power of the technology.
