[MU4 Issue] Notes with Tenuto and Tenuto-staccato sound louder than other notes #12678

Closed abariska closed 2 years ago

abariska commented 2 years ago

Describe the bug The issue is also reproducible for articulations:

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Open the score Mozart_Symphony_No._40_in_G_Minor_K._550_I._Molto_Allegro 2.mscz.zip
  2. Play from the begin
  3. Pay attention to the Violin part (2,4 measures)

Expected behavior Volume of the notes with Tenuto and Tenuto-staccato is the same as for other notes

I have a vague memory that the only case where this might be desired is for some percussion. I might be completely wrong. @bkunda and @zac?

Tantacrul commented 2 years ago

However, it would be still a big improvement to just make it so that tenuto does not affect dynamics. If we want to add specifics for percussion, we can do it later.

Tantacrul commented 2 years ago

Zac says:

  1. The volume effect should only be for non-sustaining percussion instruments
  2. Should definitely be subtler than what I just heard here

With this in mind, I think we should improve our profiles for percussion in a different release. For 4.0, we should just have a blanket rule that Tenuto does not affect volume.

abariska commented 2 years ago

@Tantacrul The problem is we have some articulations that make sound louder but shouldn't (e.g. slur, staccato etc.). So, this issue needs to be investigated more before fixing

Tantacrul commented 2 years ago

I think this bug is perfect though because it cuts right to a specific problem.

I think issues with slurs should be logged separately.

MarcSabatella commented 2 years ago

I'm not so sure the issues with tenuto and slurs are unrelated. With a slur and no tenuto, there is no issue. With a tenuto and no slur, the issue is tenuto doesn't play at all, which is fine. Only with a tenuto and a slur does the tenuto plays way too loud:

Moreover I believe that tenuto and slur issues are related to this one https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/issues/12830
