Color enhancement within game area #9

Closed cullensu closed 11 years ago

cullensu commented 11 years ago

Update color scheme of the game area (includes tiles, definition area, workspace, and tile area).

muzny commented 11 years ago

I vote that we still have bright / high contrast colors - it's a game, we don't want it to be dull and/or boring.

The site is currently using the bootswatch amelia color scheme. The preview has some other colors we could try. We're by no means limited to that palette, but I know it definitely helps me because I have no eye for that sort of thing.

cullensu commented 11 years ago

I'll try putting together a couple schemes and then we can decide which one we like.

cullensu commented 11 years ago

Here's 4 color schemes I have made, feedback is very welcome, and I am willing to make mockups of suggestions you guys may have. I have only played with colors withing the Game-Area, I didn't touch any of the stuff outside it. Color Scheme A: Color Scheme A Color Scheme B: Color Scheme B Color Scheme C: Color Scheme C Color Scheme D: Color Scheme D

I'll submit one as well.

I really like the wood grain tiles, but as you can see, I'm not a fan of deviating too much from the base color scheme. When you get to more than 3 or 4 colors, it gets harder to find ones that look good together, unless some of them are just variations on the same color. I know we want contrast, but we also want the user to be able to bear looking at the site for more than a few seconds.

If it's the color-blindness argument, I think we're okay as long as we don't have red/orange text or tiles on a green background (or vice versa), right?

From Cullen's, I like C best. Blue on orange works pretty well, though maybe we can keep the teal game background instead of having the indigo blue thing to keep it simple. Similarly, we can have the tile area background match the goldenrodish background of the definition area. Maybe the tiles and tile placeholders look out of place being too subdued/neutral compared to the saturated colors. I like the subtle wood texture, but they feel a bit out of place with the rest of the solid colors (maybe until we fancify things more, if at all).

Justin: definitely approve of the more limited color palette. Feels like it could use some warmer colors from Cullen's C or something more along the lines of the tile color, but I like it overall.

Here's a neat tool for designing color schemes that probably understands color theory better than we do, and lets you preview how it appears to various colorblindnesses (and it doesn't look like we'll need to worry much about that with these colors): http://colorschemedesigner.com/#0v61V--sHnMCy

cullensu commented 11 years ago

That's actually something I was using, although I was focusing more on high contrast/saturation colors. I think the color scheme should probably be something we push off until 3rd release, since there are so many options right now and personally I think they could use a lot more work.

muzny commented 11 years ago

I really don't like the brown empty tile spaces. I think that the 3d ends up being a little awkward. Other than that, my favorite is C as well. Possibly we could put purplish or blue empty tile places into that one? The wood is a nice touch though!

(Lets leave actually changing the color scheme until next release cycle though)

Decided to keep the colors as they are.
