Using Kanji stroke order font #144

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

It would be nice to replace current "Show stroke order" function by special
stroke order true type font because:
1) it has comprehensive kanji dadabse;
2) it request the same space for any character to show stoke order.

License of this font accepts such usage.

I'm sorry but: to import a custom font to Aedict it would largely increased the
size of the package (to 10mb - it is WAY too big). It is also known that
Android has issues with custom fonts. I'm sorry but current SOD images will
have to suffice.

What about downloading font in the same way as dictionaries is downloaded?

Unfortunately there are a lot of kanji missed in SOD images.

You're right - that could work. I thought that Android API does not allow this,
but it indeed does. Okay, reopening :)

Just an info: custom fonts do not necessarily work correctly:

Today I've got to know about another "kanji stroke order" project:
http://kanjivg.tagaini.net
http://kanji.sljfaq.org/kanjivg.html
It's probably easier to implement. What do you think?

You're right - the KanjiVG project looks interesting. However, KanjiVG images
are way bigger (as in they take more of the precious phone screen space) than
the SOD images. So probably I will not yet implement this. Please reopen if you
find kanji that is present in KanjiVG and not in SOD.

There are lots of kanjis not present in SOD. Perhaps try converting KanjiVG
images to SOD-like images?

I have succeeded in converting the KanjiVG images to the KanjiCafe SOD-like
images, which adds SOD images for 7500 kanjis (5 times more than the old
KanjiCafe 1500 image base), and also enlarges the download from 4 mb to 24 mb
:-)
Cannot publish this file yet though, because this huge file causes a lot of
OutOfMemoryErrors in Aedict 3.3.
