Here is the distribution of Boophis in GBIF, showing the erroneous records from Sri Lanka
Hi Rod Thanks for the specific information on this taxonomic update. It's really useful. We still have a lot of outdated taxonomy in our collection (slowly we are updating things in the amphibians) but this is one we can do quick. It will take a bit for it to be updated from Arctos to VertNet (should be one month or less). Thanks - Carol Spencer
@atrox10 Thanks for the speedy response. It will be interesting to see how long the changes take to reach GBIF.
@rdmpage this is updated at MVZ-Arctos, so we'll see how long it takes to show up on VertNet and GBIF!! Thanks again.
All specimens of Boophis microtympanum from Sri Lanka http://portal.vertnet.org/search?q=MVZ+Boophis+microtympanum do not belong in Boophis but rather Pseudophilautus.
Boophis is a genus from Madagascar, and includes a species called Boophis microtympanum. The MVZ specimens from Sri Lanka were originally identified as Rhacophorus microtympanum (see http://arctos.database.museum/guid/MVZ:Herp:202467?seid=1800680 ). Meredith J. Mahoney then identified them as Boophis microtympanum, which I suggest is due to confusion over two different uses of microtympanum: microtympanum Günther, 1858 from Sri Lanka http://research.amnh.org/vz/herpetology/amphibia/Amphibia/Anura/Rhacophoridae/Rhacophorinae/Pseudophilautus/Pseudophilautus-microtympanum and microtympanum Boettger, 1881 from Madagascar http://research.amnh.org/vz/herpetology/amphibia/Amphibia/Anura/Mantellidae/Boophinae/Boophis/Boophis-microtympanum These frog genera have had a complicated nomenclatural history, but it would be nice to correct these specimens because at the moment in implies that the endemic Madagascar genus Boophis also occurs in Sri Lanka.
