Doing this:

gem install gir_ffi-gtk4

Led to:

ERROR:  Could not find a valid gem 'gir_ffi-gtk4' (>= 0) in any repository
ERROR:  Possible alternatives: gir_ffi-gtk, gir_ffi-gst, gir_ffi

I think the .gem may not be at rubygems.org.

The gtk3 and gir_ffi on the other hand, if I recall correctly, work via "gem install".

That is correct. The gir_ffi-gtk4 gem is not ready for use yet.
