Error 5103 When Performing Date Queries

What steps will reproduce the problem?
this is just one sample
1. Select few (or several columns) from Opportunity using the wizard interface
2. Query (through the wizard) is "Close Date", Greater Than, 2012-01-01
3. Results in errors

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I can query based on non-date fields fine.  I've tried multiple date formats - 
even YYYY-MM-DD as directed by SalesForce support.

Instead, I get Error Generated by request:: An internal server error has 
occured while processing your request.
Url:https:/na3-api.salesforce.com/services/Soap/c/13.0/00D50000000JKGC
ExceptionCode: 5103

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?  With
what Salesforce.com edition?
SF Enterprise, Windows 7 64 Bit, Excel 2013
