cannot use items in Subterrane

(I'm using firefox 89.0 on linux, but it probably shouldn't matter)

Steps to reproduce:

1. enter any area marked "Subterrane" on the map, up to and including the bit where you have to help Alraune's sprout.
2. make sure you have ANY item selected
3. press enter to use the item

Expected behaviour: some text appears telling you what the item did, and, if applicable, there is some effect on the world

Actual behaviour: nothing happens - not even flavour text

So far I haven't been able to reproduce this error.

I've tried following these repro steps in the Subterrane at several different points during the game's progression, including both before and after helping Alraune's sprout.

I've also tried following these steps both with and without opening the map and other menus, and with and without getting hit by the falling spikes (which are themselves pretty glitchy).

A few questions:

1. Were you able to use items again after leaving the Subterrane?
2. Can you think of anything else you did before trying to use the selected item? Anything at all would be helpful!

Hi! I was able to use items after leaving the Subterrane, and after entering the Subterrane again they still wouldn't work. I don't remember doing anything that could have caused it - it failed no matter whether I was hit by the spikes or opened the map or anything. a screenshot of my inventory, if it helps.

Hey, just writing a note to say this issue persists.

I realize there hasn't been an update since this issue was first reported but I really want to finish this game, and I'm enjoying it to much to stop because of a softlock bug. I'm playing on the html player that comes with the Itch.io app (v25.5.1) for Linux (Fedora 36 KDE). If you need any further information, feel free to ask.

Unfortunately I still haven't been able to track down the cause of this. This was my first full GB Studio game and there was a lot I didn't understand about how to work with it at the time.

I am considering rewriting this game using a different system, which would give me the chance to redo this section. 🤔💭

I ran into the same issue on a gb emulator on my phone. I went down there before getting the candle and pitcher, and I could use the amulet to teleport out of there. But when I came back afterwards, I couldn't use items any more. After grabbing those items, but before returning to the cave, I got the help of Suzuka. Not sure if that had any effect.

I understand it's a game from years ago, and it can be hard to get back to those, so no pressure. 😌

Btw, I tried again, specifically doing only what was needed to advance in the Subterrane (plus dealing with the human, because I forgot the order of things, but I didn't grab the amulet), and it worked fine. I then tried messing around with saving and loading a bit, and it also continued to work. I feel one could go through the game multiple times and try to isolate the variables, but that would be very time consuming. 🤔
