Have you had any issues since doing this? Did you have to copy all your data back to your NAS and were there any performance issues afterwards?
Cheers,
Steve

Steve, no performance issues to report, using it as a host for 30 VMs (only lab) at the moment, little latency, nothing crazy though, for normal day to day, should be fine.

I've tried this on my Ultra 2 Plus and it works, but I have to manually install app (vice using the graphic interface) Did you have the same problem? Should I reinstall or have I missed a setting?

No I just used the UI and it worked

I performed the factory reset and rebooted the box. The Ultra 2 Plus now performs as you described. All functions in the GUI work as if the unit was sold with the 6.5 (Current) IOS. Thank you for the follow up.

Hi guys,

Thanks Myles for leaving your experiments here. I have an old Ultra2 with an old Debian 4.x something.
My disks are full of 20+ years of emails and pictures. I'm fed up with the old Debian. I wanted to change the release. I didn't find a clear statement of what needed to be saved ? On my older ReadyNAS Duo, there were no extra disk for the system. Same here ? Cheers. Yann

Hi!

Thanks for your article, did you upgrade to the latest updates (like 6.5.2) since then without problem?

Cheers, Yves

Glad to read that.

Unfortunately I just tried upgrading my ReadyNas Ultra 2 from 4.2.30 to OS6 following your instructions but it fails on step 1, saying it 'couldn't extract files properly' from the "R4toR6_Prep_Addon.bin"...

Njo chance here

Work was getting rid of a ReadyNAS 2100 v2 decided it would behouve me to use this since my FreeNAS box was acting bonkers. Did the upgrade as explained and its working fine for me.

Thank you very much, a great job.
I did the update on my ReadyNAS 2100. Every thing work fine, so it seems...

Two things:
1. The USB devices will not get mounted. Any advise?
2. Movies are no longer played smoothly

Do you know if this firmware will work on the original Silver color ReadyNAS NV+ RND4425-100NAS? I was reading somewhere that this model has a Sparc processor, but maybe the firmware you are talking about is for a Sparc processor? Just want to make sure before I brick my old ReadyNAS NV+.

I have it installed on my Ultra 6, which uses an atom x86 proc, would be surprised if it worked on SPARC

ReadyNASOS6.x is 64 bit and the NVX and 2100V1 have 32-bit X86 processors and cannot be upgraded. All the information and files needed are located on the Netgear ReadyNAS forum. I'm running OS6.7.5 on several legacy NASes without a hitch. There is no chance it will ever be available for the NV or Duo (SPARC or ARM versions).

This was really what i needed to refresh an old NAS. I was looking for a way to update to maybe a 3rd party firmware and your blogpost came up. In the end i followed this guide:
http://netgear.nas-central....

But it was your blogpost that got me onto the update. So thanks very much!

I have encountered the same USB mounting issue. USB HDD are detected by the OS but are not auto-mounted and are therefore not visible (or selectable) in Frontview.

skim626 commented 2 years ago

Did you upgrade your ram? How much ram do you have on yours?

mylesagray commented 2 years ago

@skim626 at the time we did, yup - honestly don't remember how much though, something is telling my 4GB?

1badapple commented 2 years ago

Any chance this process will work on a RBD4000 v3?

LarsLars commented 1 year ago

@skim626 Hi :-) Yesterday I was cleaning up and found my ReadyNAS Duo v1. I upgraded it to 1GB years ago. Which model do you have? Did you upgrade the ram? And did you perform this OS update? @mylesagray I am wondering if 1GB is enough for this update. Do you know that? Best Lars

skim626 commented 1 year ago

@LarsLars I have an Ultra 4 Plus. I purchased a 2gb stick off ebay for about $5 and did the upgrade. Upgrade went smoothly and everything is running well. I don't use any plug ins though. I just use it as a file server. I also performed an auto-update to a newer version which also worked without issues. I did have one issue come to think of it. I had a 12tb WD Easystore external drive that I had connected to the NAS. And one day as I was transferring some files to it over the network, the copy failed, and the external drive stopped recognizing. I plugged it directly into my computer because the Readynas GUI recommended I do so and scan it (chkdsk) to make sure it was okay. It checked out fine. But I didn't bother moving it back to the NAS.

LarsLars commented 1 year ago

@skim626 Thank you very much for your swift reply. I can see that ReadyNAS Duo v1 is still sold on the second-hand market, so maybe now is the time to get rid of it. ;-) I do not know if my processor and ram are sufficient for this OS update. Best Lars

LarsLars commented 1 year ago

Update: I tried to upload and verify the R4toR6_Prep_Addon.bin but it says that "Update file is not valid for this architecture." I think this is because the ReadyNAS Duo v1 has a SPARC processor. It might work on a v2 since it has a ARM processor.

skim626 commented 1 year ago

@LarsLars That's correct. It only works on the x86 architecture.

nbjeter3 commented 1 year ago

I have now tried to perform this update on 2 different Readynas 2100's and both have been bricked. It says everything verifies and seems okay, but then it reboots the NAS and that is it. It never boots again. I have even tried using a console cable to get to a command line so I can see what is happening on boot and nothing. If I try to use the boot menu, It will make it as far as letting me choose the boot option, but the moment I select it, nothing else happens and the system is completely locked. Unfortunately I now have two rather large paperweights and I can't figure out any way to come back from it. Anyone have any ideas? On the second one, I even went as far as pulling all the drives, wiping them completely, doing a full factory reset on the NAS to ensure everything was as fresh as possible and it still bricked.

plutoniumshore commented 1 year ago

I know I did this years ago (Successfully) thanks to this thread and spent hours looking for it again! I picked up a readynas NV+ on Ebay for pennies in the hopes to set something cheap up for a friend only to find it only support an ancient version of Raidiator that only support TLS 1.0 and some other quirks that make it pretty much useless in 2023. In anyones travels (as my googlefu has yielded no useful results) has anyone run into a process similar to this thread, but for the ARM based variants of the older ReadyNAS appliances? Looking for anything this little box can run that will bring it closer to present day software.

TheSandshark commented 1 year ago

Partly repeating myself since some have asked about other models since I left my first comment:

ReadyNASOS6.x is 64 bit and the NVX, 1500, and 2100V1 have 32-bit X86 processors and cannot be upgraded. All the information and files needed are located on the Netgear ReadyNAS forum. I've run OS6 on several legacy NASes without a hitch and even on ReadyData units (currently on two RN4200V2 and one RD5200). There is no chance it will ever be available for the NV, NV+, or Duo (V1 SPARC or V2 ARM versions).

These units can be easily updated to OS6: 2100V2, 3200, 4200, 4200V2, Ultra/UltraPlus2/4/6, Pro2/4/6, Pro BE, and Pro Pioneer. The ReadyData conversion requires special handling: RD516 and RD5200.

With OS6.10.x, it is advisable to insure your NAS has at least 2GB of RAM. Most legacy X64 units shipped with 1GB, but native OS6 X64 units all shipped with 2GB and the OS has grown such that you may get an out of memory issue without the added RAM. BTW, only some rack-mount units use dual-channel RAM, so there is no need to match the banks on any other.

It is also advisable to back up your VPD (Vendor Product Data) file before the upgrade, as many have had it become corrupt during the upgrade or a future OS update (a newish problem seemingly starting with OS6.10.x). It's an encrypted file that can only be replaced by Netgear but is critical in getting the unit to boot. Instructions are here: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Using-your-ReadyNAS-in-Business/Backup-and-restore-of-VPD-file-for-legacy-ReadyNAS-running-oS6/td-p/2253308

TheSandshark commented 1 year ago

There was previously a new message in the thread about someone who supposedly converted an NVX. Now, it's gone, and there is a message in the Netgear forum from somebody who bricked their NVX trying it. Probably not a coincidence. So, it bears repeating: If you try this on a 1500, 2100V1, or NVX, you will brick your NAS. On SPARC or ARM based systems, it will simply fail. But on the 32-bit Intel based units listed, it will appear to work, till you re-boot. BTW, I do not know how to tell an original 2100 from the 2100V2 other than RAIDar or the GUI telling you it's a V2. If you failed to read to the end of the thread and tried it anyway, most have had success with the USB recovery tool fixing it (make sure it's the one for OS4.2.x), though some have not. But with OS6 based on Debian 8, which has been archived, and Negear having turned off ReadyCloud and essentially abandoned the ReadyNAS, I'm not sure why anyone would be doing this now. Go buy a new non-Netgear NAS.

Hello, I have an old ReadyNAS Duo V2 with firmware 5.3.13. In your opinion, before to try to update the system to 6.5, have i to perform a factory reset to go back to 4.X firmware? Thank you

disbud596 commented 6 months ago

I took a chance and tried installing OS6 on a RN2100 v1 and a RN102 v1 32Bit and everything works, including the latest Plex 1.40 on both. All the information I've researched has say it was impossible, but yet they are running flawlessly. Hope this helps someone.

I just installed OS6 on a RN2100v1 and a RN102v1. The RN102 has Been running OS6 for months and the RN2100v1. Both are running the latest version of Plex 1.40. I did notice that they took about 30mins to completly update and come back online, with multiple reboots. Just be patient.

disbud596 commented 6 months ago

Also, only upgrade to 6.10.9 and add-ons will still be available. Downgrading from 6.10.10 to 6.10.9 will also work, just Google the old version and upload it manually.

TheSandshark commented 6 months ago

The RN102 is a native OS6 unit, it never did and never can run OS4.2.x from which to convert. And, of course, it can be upgraded to the latest version of OS6 with nothing special being needed. The RN2100V1 (which is a rack-mount unit) absolutely cannot be converted. I think this poster is confused as to the model numbers. While the add-on option is still there in OS6.10.9, Debian 8 has been archived and most app installations will fail unless you make some changes to the sources list as described here: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Using-your-ReadyNAS-in-Business/How-I-got-apt-update-and-install-to-work-with-Debian-Jessie/td-p/2306772

I really appreciate you continuing responding to comments on such an old post. After all the research I've done, this is the only reliable and current information I've been able to find.

A couple of questions before upgrading my Ultra 4 with 2GB RAM:

  1. are there any downsides to the update, eg I read some old comments circa 2015 saying they had issues with fans running full speed.
  2. Is there a recommended version of OS6.x for my model - I assume it would get to a point where the RAM and CPU requirements would be a bit much for my older hardware
