"Why not accept instead a factor? A factor is easily converted to a design 
matrix with: model.matrix(~ fac -1)."

An excellent point. This would bridge the idea of standard ANOVA usage and 
BADA+DICA.

The DESIGN data should be accepted as a variety of methods.
