Would be good to have a more modern component for the search; like Solr or Elasticsearch
Are there any documented interfaces for the internal search portions; that will need to be changed in order to rip out Xapian?

Hi @leowmjw, at the moment there are no documented interfaces for the internal search portions - it's very much embedded in the rest of the code. The first step in making the search more modular would be to define these touchpoints.

Came across https://kronuz.io/Xapiand/ (via HN) which may solve some of the problems we're having with Xapian. No idea how well supported it is etc, but worth investigation when the time comes.
