@evdb - as you expected, unicode was a problem. Do you think just swapping csv for unicodecsv is sufficient? It seems to be a magic bullet...

@stevenday if unicodecsv works as advertised it should be just what's needed. I'm glad that I know about it now, will save me lots of hassle in future :)
