Session 1: Data viz principles -finding a story and wireframing 7th May 10 - 12.30 pm

Adam Frost and Tobias Sturt of Add Two introduce a fundamental approach to information design that concentrates on how we can effectively communicate complicated stories to complex audiences simply, engagingly and with impact. The course outlines a basic process of Find, Design, make and Refine, which can be applied to any data visualisation project, but particularly data journalism. Content Director Adam Frost will then outline the practice of structuring stories out of and with data, while Creative Director Tobias Sturt will show how we go about telling those stories with visuals. The course will include hands-on exercises, following the process with an example dataset, so that you gain practical and concrete experience of approaches and tools.

There is one tiny piece of pre-work which it would be great if you could send us over before the session on Thursday (see below)

pre-work: Please nominate an example of data visualisation you would consider 'best practice'. This can be something that your own organisation made, or it can be someone else's work - be prepared to explain why you like it. please send this directly by Wednesday 6th midday at the latest. to adam@addtwodigital.com and tobias@addtwodigital.com.

Anything from Edward Tufte's books.

@ajparsons any notes from this? Think this is done now so can close.

They said they would send the slides through, so I'll update this comment then and close it.

My session leader also said she would send slides through from the first session I attended, and was surprised to learn in the second that none of us had received them. She's taken our email addresses and going to send them directly rather than through Nesta.
