mhchem package causes program to stop compiling (and lose path information)

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Download Master's/Doctoral thesis template from 
http://www.latextemplates.com/template/masters-doctoral-thesis

2. Compile main.tex first to check it works (it should do), then try compiling 
it after adding /usepackage[version=2]{mhchem}
3. File doesn't compile. If you close texmaker, open main.tex again, an error 
message appears saying 'file not found'

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
File should compile and pdf preview should be seen in right hand window. 
Freezes instead. 

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Version 4.3 on Windows 7
